My Statement of Intent

The audience for my images is intended to be mentors and students on this course.

In compiling this set of images I have been inspired by the social realism of artists such as Ken Loach (This is England) and writer Alan Sillitoe (Saturday Night, Sunday Morning).

Six architecture photographs will be use to illustrate the decline of public house culture in Mansfield, UK. In the eighties and nineties Mansfield had a vibrant nightlife based around the pubs of the town centre. Whilst there is a small growth in bars and restaurants, the traditional boozer is in decline. This is the version of Mansfield that we really like; the traditional pub where you can have a drink without buying food, where folk buy a bag of crisps and split it so the whole table can share it. However, changes in consumer behaviour, rent rises and many other factors are leading to a rapid decrease in such establishments. The modern landscape of Mansfield public houses is one of decline and neglect.

I will capture the images in natural daylight from a street level perspective. Images will be in landscape format. The images will be an honest representation of the building in order to give an authentic perspective that the people of Mansfield will recognise and will resonate with the viewer.

I hope that the audience to feel a sense of nostalgia and of a culture lost to new generations.
